Tumble Dryer Water Full Light On When Tank Is Empty
If your tumble dryer water full light won't go off even though you've just emptied the container, it's frustrating and a little confusing. You've done what the machine asked, the tank is dry, and yet the warning keeps glaring at you. In most cases this points to a problem in the pump area of the dryer rather than anything you've done wrong. Here's how the system is meant to work, why the light sometimes lies to you, and when it's time to get an engineer out.
How the water full system works on a condenser dryer
Condenser tumble dryers pull moisture out of your laundry, turn it back into water and collect it in a removable tray. On most machines the water collection tray sits in a spot similar to the detergent dispenser on a washing machine, often behind a flap near the top or built into the front.
The tray is usually quite long and there's nothing inside it to stop the water sloshing around, so it can feel heavy and awkward once it fills up. When it reaches its limit, a light or symbol appears on the front of the machine to tell you it needs emptying.
There's one detail a lot of people miss. As soon as that indicator comes on, the dryer automatically switches off the heating element while the rest of the machine carries on running. The drum still turns and air still blows, so at a glance everything looks normal, but it's only pushing out cold air. If your laundry is coming out damp or your dryer seems like it isn't heating, emptying the water container is one of the first things worth checking.
Emptying the water collection tray the right way
Because the tray is heavy and the water moves about freely inside, it pays to handle it carefully:
- Support both ends of the tray as you lift it out, rather than holding it from one side.
- Carry it over to the sink.
- Turn it upside down.
- Let the water drain out naturally.
Once it's empty, slide it back into place fully and run the dryer again. On a healthy machine, the warning should clear and the heating element will come back on.
When the light stays on but the tank is empty
Here's the scenario that brings most people to this page. You've emptied the tray, it's genuinely empty, you've refitted it properly, and the water full light is still on and won't go off.
When that happens, the dryer is telling you something is wrong even though the obvious cause has been ruled out. The likely culprit is a fault in the pump area of the appliance. On many condenser dryers, water is pumped up from the base of the machine into the collection tray. If that pump or the sensor that monitors water level isn't behaving, the dryer can think the tray is full when it isn't, or fail to move water where it should go. The result is a warning that simply won't clear no matter how many times you empty the container.
This isn't something you can fix by emptying or reseating the tray, and it's not a job we'd recommend tackling yourself. Diagnosing whether it's the pump, the float or level sensor, or the wiring behind it needs an engineer to open the machine up and test it properly.
What to check before you call
A quick run through these basics rules out the simple stuff first:
- Make sure the tray is genuinely empty and not just low.
- Push the tray all the way back in until it's fully seated. A tray that isn't pushed home can trigger or hold the warning.
- Try a fresh cycle to see whether the light clears once everything is back in place.
If you've done all of that and the water full light still won't go off, the problem is inside the machine and needs proper attention.
Book an engineer to sort a persistent water full light
A pump or sensor fault is exactly the kind of repair our engineers handle. We quote a service charge before anyone attends, and that covers all the labour, the callout and VAT where it applies. If parts turn out to be needed, we'll quote those separately and get your go-ahead before any work is done, so there's no labour added on top later. Every repair is backed by our guarantee, with the length depending on the parts fitted (full details are in our terms and conditions).
We offer same and next day repairs, and our engineers are trained across all the major makes and appliance types, so we can repair your dryer whatever the brand. You can book a repair online or call us on 0333 016 9622.
