Tumble Dryer Maintenance Checklist to Prevent Faults
A tumble dryer works hard, and most of the faults we get called out to could have been avoided with a few minutes of regular care. The good news is that the maintenance jobs that matter most are quick, they need no tools, and they make a real difference to how well your dryer dries and how much it costs to run.
Below is a straightforward set of tumble dryer maintenance tips you can build into your routine. We've focused on the tasks that prevent the faults we see most often, so you get longer appliance life and lower running costs without much effort.
Why regular maintenance matters
When filters clog, water builds up or airflow is restricted, your dryer has to work longer and harder to do the same job. That means longer cycles, higher energy bills and more strain on the heating element and motor. Stay on top of a few simple checks and you keep the machine efficient and head off the kind of breakdown that needs an engineer.
Clean the lint filter after every cycle
The lint filter is the single most important thing to keep clean. It traps the fluff that comes off your clothes, and if it's left to build up, it chokes the airflow the dryer needs to work.
- Pull out the filter (usually in the door opening or just inside the drum).
- Peel away the layer of lint with your fingers.
- Give it a rinse under the tap every so often if it feels greasy, then dry it fully before refitting.
Get into the habit of doing this each time you empty the drum. A blocked filter is a common reason a dryer runs hot, takes too long or stops drying properly.
Look after the condenser
If you have a condenser dryer, it has a condenser unit that pulls moisture out of the warm air. Over time it collects lint and grime, which reduces how well it works.
Most condensers can be removed for cleaning. Check your manual, take the unit out, rinse it under the tap until the water runs clear and let it drain before putting it back. A clean condenser keeps cycles efficient and stops the machine struggling to remove moisture. For a fuller walkthrough, see our guide on how to maintain a condenser tumble dryer.
Empty the water collection tray
Condenser dryers don't need a drain hose because the water they pull from your washing is collected in a tray (sometimes called the water container) instead. In most machines this tray sits in a similar spot to the detergent dispenser on a washing machine, usually near the top.
The tray is quite long, and it gets heavy once it fills up. There's nothing inside to stop the water sloshing about, so it's worth handling carefully.
How to empty it safely
- Support both ends of the tray as you lift it out. Because it's long and the water moves around inside, holding it at one end alone makes spills likely.
- Carry it over to the sink.
- Turn it upside down.
- Let the water drain out naturally.
Slide it back in fully and you're done. Empty it after every cycle or two and you'll never be caught out by a full tray mid load.
What the full-tray indicator means
When the water collection tray fills up, a light or symbol appears on the front of the machine to tell you it needs emptying. This is the bit that catches a lot of people out.
When that indicator comes on, the heating element switches off automatically while the rest of the machine carries on running. The drum still turns and the dryer sounds like it's working normally, but it's only blowing cold air. So your clothes come out no drier than they went in.
If your dryer seems like it isn't heating properly, or you're not sure what the warning light is telling you, the first thing to do is empty the water collection tray.
| Indicator | What it means | Likely causes | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-tray light or symbol | The water collection tray needs emptying. The heating element is turned off automatically while other components keep running, so the dryer blows cold air. | The tray is full and needs emptying. If the tray is empty but the light still shows, there could be a fault in the pump area. | Empty the water collection tray. If the tray is empty but the indicator stays on, book an engineer (a pump area fault is likely). |
If the light stays on with an empty tray
Emptied the tray but the indicator is still showing? That usually points to a fault in the pump area of the appliance, which moves the collected water up to the tray. This isn't a DIY fix. You'll need an engineer from NAC to diagnose and sort it, and you can book one using the Book A Repair button on our website. There's more detail in our article on tumble dryer water container problems and how to fix them.
Keep the airflow clear
A dryer needs to breathe. Restrict the air going in or out and you get longer cycles, overheating and clothes that stay damp.
- Don't push the machine tight against a wall if it vents at the back.
- Keep the area around it free of clutter and dust.
- On vented models, check the vent hose isn't kinked, crushed or blocked with lint.
- Wipe around the door seal and drum opening now and then so fluff doesn't gather there.
Don't overload the drum
Cramming the drum in to save a cycle works against you. Clothes need room to tumble so warm air can pass through them. Overloading leads to uneven, damp results and makes the machine run longer than it should, which costs you more and wears parts faster.
Your quick maintenance checklist
- Clean the lint filter after every cycle.
- Empty the water collection tray after every cycle or two.
- Rinse the condenser unit regularly (condenser models).
- Keep airflow clear front and back, and check the vent hose on vented models.
- Avoid overloading the drum.
- Wipe around the door and drum opening to stop lint building up.
When to call NAC
If you've kept up with the maintenance and the dryer still isn't heating, the full-tray light won't clear with an empty tray, or something just doesn't sound or smell right, it's time to get it looked at properly.
We quote a service charge before an engineer attends, and that covers all the labour, the callout and VAT where it applies. The only extra is for parts if any are needed, and we quote those separately for your approval before we carry out the work. No additional labour is charged on top. Every repair is guaranteed, with the length depending on the parts fitted and covered under our terms and conditions.
NAC is a family run business with the same team behind it for decades, offering same and next day repairs with no hidden charges. To get your dryer sorted, hit the Book A Repair button on our website or call us on 0333 016 9622. You can also get in touch through our contact page or see the areas we cover.
