Freezer Making Loud Noises? How to Find the Cause
A freezer is never completely silent. There's usually a low hum as it runs, the odd click as it cycles, and the occasional gurgle of refrigerant moving through the system. So when your freezer starts making loud noises that you've never heard before, it's worth paying attention. Some sounds are harmless and easy to sort yourself. Others point to a part that's wearing out and will only get worse if you leave it.
This guide walks you through how to track down where the noise is coming from, the simple fixes you can try at home, and the point at which it makes sense to call in an engineer.
Start by finding where the noise is coming from
The good news is that you can usually pin down the source of a noisy freezer using nothing more than your ears. Stand near the appliance and listen carefully, moving around it so you can tell whether the sound is coming from the back, inside the cabinet, or near the base.
Most freezer noises trace back to one of four areas:
- The compressor sits at the back near the bottom and does the hard work of pumping refrigerant. A steady hum is normal. Loud humming, buzzing or rattling here can signal a problem.
- The evaporator fan lives inside the freezer compartment and circulates cold air. A worn fan or its motor often produces a grinding, squealing or rattling sound.
- The condenser and its coils are usually at the back. When they're clogged, the freezer strains and gets noisier.
- The ice maker, if your model has one, makes its own clicks and clunks as it fills and drops ice. These can be louder than you'd expect but are often perfectly normal.
Once you've got a rough idea of where the sound is coming from, you can work through the checks below.
At-home fixes for a noisy freezer
Make sure the freezer is level
A freezer that isn't sitting flat will wobble and rock, and that movement turns into noise and vibration against the floor. Pop a spirit level on top and check it in both directions. If it's off, adjust the feet or shift the position of the appliance until it sits perfectly level. It's a small thing, but it cures a surprising number of mystery rattles and buzzes.
Clean the condenser coils
Over time, dust and debris build up on the condenser coils, usually found at the back of the freezer. When the coils are dirty, the appliance has to work much harder to hold its temperature, and a hard-working freezer is a noisy one. Give the coils a careful wipe to clear the dust away. As a bonus, clean coils run more efficiently, which is better for your energy bills too.
Check the evaporator fan
If the noise is coming from inside the freezer compartment, the evaporator fan is a likely culprit. A faulty or damaged fan, or a worn fan motor, often produces grinding or squealing sounds. Check your appliance manual to find exactly where the part sits, then look for any obvious signs of damage. If the fan or motor is damaged, it will need replacing with a new freezer fan motor. This is the point where it's worth getting advice from a repair technician rather than guessing.
Still noisy? Call a professional
If you've levelled the appliance, cleaned the coils and checked the fan, and the noise is still there, the fault is likely to be something more serious, such as the compressor. At that stage, book a callout with NAC and let one of our engineers take a proper look.
When you need a professional
Some jobs really do call for an experienced engineer:
- A worn or damaged evaporator fan motor that needs replacing. It's a fiddly part to access and fit correctly, so get advice before buying anything.
- Persistent noise after the basic checks. If levelling, coil cleaning and fan inspection haven't solved it, the problem may lie deeper in the system, often with the compressor.
Our engineers are trained across all the major brands and appliance types, so whatever make of freezer you own, we can help. You'll get a clear service charge quoted before anyone attends, covering all the labour, callout and VAT where it applies. If a part such as a replacement fan motor is needed, we'll quote that separately and only fit it once you've agreed, with no extra labour charge on top. Every repair is guaranteed too, with the exact length depending on the parts fitted and covered by our terms and conditions.
If you'd rather source a part yourself, our partner site Spares4Appliances.co.uk stocks thousands of spares with fast dispatch.
Keep your freezer running quietly
A bit of routine care goes a long way towards preventing noise in the first place.
- Clean the coils regularly. Wipe the coils at the back every couple of weeks or about once a month using mild soap and warm water. Steer clear of harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, which can do more harm than good. Keeping the coils clear stops dust collecting and protects the freezer's efficiency.
- Give it room to breathe. Make sure there's enough space around the freezer for proper ventilation and heat to escape. A freezer crammed tightly against walls or units runs hotter, works harder and tends to be noisier.
Getting the temperature right helps the appliance run smoothly as well. If you're not sure where yours should sit, our guide on setting the correct fridge freezer temperature is a useful read.
