How To Properly Maintain A Dryer Filter

In this article, we’re going to talk through how to properly maintain a dryer filter. All tumble dryers will have some form of lint filter inside them and this filter should be cleared out after every cycle.

However, there is a common fault seen on many modern machines.

There is typically a symbol on the control panel of the dryer that appears when the filter needs cleaning. Sometimes this may also be displayed as an error code.

If a light, symbol or error code is displayed indicating that the filter requires cleaning after the filter has been checked and cleared then there are some further checks that you can make.

Step 1

Check whether air can pass through the filter.

There is a sensor located towards the bottom of most condenser dryers and air has to be able to pass through the filter and over this sensor. If the fine pores on the filter become blocked then no air flow passes over the sensor and this can trigger the fault.

To ensure the filer is clear, it can be held under running water and lightly scrubbed clean. If you can gently blow onto the filter and feel the air coming out the other side then this is a good indication that it is clear.

Step 2

Check that the sensor is clear.

When looking down into the filter location with the filter removed, the sensor will be visible. Lint can often make its way past the filter and begin to coat the sensor itself. This can cause an electronic error in the machine and lead it to believe that the sensor is blocked.

Step 3

Cleaning this sensor will often rectify the indication issue on the front of the machine.

I hope you have found this article helpful, however if you have thoroughly cleaned the filter and the sensor and are still experiencing issues with your dryer then you can book an engineer visit quickly and easily by following the Book A Repair button on our website.
