How To Maintain A Dryer Condenser

In this article, we’re going to talk through a common issue with condenser tumble dryers. If your condenser dryer is taking longer to dry than normal, or you are having to put it on two or three times, it is likely that the condenser located near the bottom of the machine is blocked up.

Many customers are not aware of how frequently they need to clean the condenser in their dryer.

It is recommended that these are cleaned and maintained at least once a month. Components such as the filter and water tray are often obvious areas to maintain but the condenser often gets missed.

To check the condenser in your tumble dryer, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Access the condenser by opening the compartment at the front of the machine.

This is usually located near the bottom and either folds downwards or opens on hinges.

Step 2

There are often clips that lock the condenser in place.

Move these clips to the unlocked position and pull the condensing unit out. The warm air that passes through the filter must also pass through the condenser, moving from the front of the machine towards the back.

If the front of the condenser is blocked with lint, the warm air will not be able to travel through the condenser. This means that the warm air cannot be condensed back into water.

Step 3

To check the condenser for blockages, look down the back of the unit while shining a torch light at the front.

Step 4

To clean out any blockages, use some form of pressurised water.

This can simply be water from your kitchen sink. If your tap is tall enough, place the back of the condensing unit underneath so that water flows towards the front of the unit.

If not, an outside tap, hosepipe or even a shower will also work effectively. Again, ensure the water flows from the back of the condensing unit towards the front.

Step 5

Replace the condenser back into the machine.

It is worth bearing in mind that tumble dryers use a very high heating element and therefore can be very costly to run. If you find that you are having to run your dryer several times to dry a single load of clothing then this will be using a large amount of energy.

Step 6

Regularly maintaining your condenser will ensure your appliance runs efficiently.
