How To Inspect Clean And Maintain The Filters On A Cooker Hood Or Extractor Fan

In this article, we’re going to explain how to clean and maintain your cooker hood or extractor fan.

There are a couple of things you can do. One is removing and cleaning the filters, or replacing them if necessary, and the other is changing a lightbulb. We’re going to focus specifically on the filters inside a cooker hood. It is common for most extractors or cooker hoods to have two or three metal gauze filters.

To clean and maintain your cooker hood or extractor fan, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Remove the metal gauze filters by pushing down on the sprung loaded catch either side to release the tabs and the filter will drop out.

Stainless steel mesh filters come up extremely well in a dishwasher so are very easy to clean and maintain. You don’t have to remove or replace metal filters in the same order as they all fit in different positions.

Step 2

On the motor section of the cooker hood, there may be a carbon filter. Remove this by turning a quarter of a turn and it will pop out.

Unfortunately, carbon filters can’t be cleaned or maintained so when they get saturated, you will need to replace them as this can cause issues for the motor itself. Not all cooker hoods and extractors have a carbon filter.

On older extractor fans and cooker hoods, the removable panels are often in two halves with a paper gauze filter in between. These will become saturated and can be replaced easily. Paper gauze filters can be purchased in large sheets and cut to the size you need.

If you think you’re having problems with your extractor not working efficiently, it’s a good idea to check whether your carbon filter is saturated. If so, simply replace it and see how you get on.

Step 3

The other thing you can do is to deal with the lightbulbs.

The method for changing these lightbulbs is exactly the same as a fridge or a cooker so please reference those videos in our Help section of the website for guidance.
