Correctly Maintaining A Dishwasher Filter

Maintaining your dishwasher’s filter is crucial for its proper functioning. The filter’s primary role is to capture food particles and debris from your dishes, preventing them from clogging the dishwasher’s spray arms and pump.

A clogged or dirty filter can lead to a number of problems with your dishwasher, whereas regular filter maintenance can extend the lifespan of your dishwasher and keep it running efficiently.

That’s why we’ve put together this guide on how to correctly maintain your dishwasher filter!

Problems Caused by Neglecting Your Dishwasher Filter

  • Poor Cleaning Performance – When the filter is clogged, it restricts water flow in the dishwasher. This can result in dishes that are not properly cleaned or rinsed, leaving behind food residue and stains.
  • Unpleasant Odours – Food particles trapped in a dirty filter can create a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to foul odours inside the dishwasher. These odours can transfer to your dishes, making them smell and taste unpleasant.
  • Damage to the Dishwasher – A clogged filter can strain the dishwasher’s pump and motor as they work harder to circulate water. Over time, this can lead to increased wear and tear on these critical components, potentially causing expensive damage and repairs.
  • Hygiene Concerns – A neglected filter can compromise the hygiene of your dishes. Without proper cleaning and rinsing, harmful bacteria and pathogens may not be effectively removed from your dishes during the wash cycle.
  • Increased Energy and Water Consumption – A clogged filter can prolong the dishwasher’s operating time as it struggles to clean the dishes. This not only wastes energy but also consumes more water, leading to higher utility bills.

How to Correctly Maintain your Dishwasher Filter

Now you know why it’s so important, let’s get stuck in. But first,  ensure your dishwasher is unplugged or disconnected from the power source for safety reasons!

  1. Consult the Manual – Refer to your dishwasher’s user manual to locate the filter and learn about any specific instructions or guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  2. Prepare Your Workspace – Lay down a towel or mat to catch any water or debris that may come out during the process. You also may want to wear gloves to protect your hands.
  3. Open the Dishwasher Door – Fully open the dishwasher door to access the filter. The filter is typically located at the bottom of the dishwasher, near the spray arm.
  4. Remove the Lower Rack – If your dishwasher has a lower rack, remove it to access the filter more easily.
  5. Identify the Filter – Locate the filter assembly. There are usually two main types: a cylindrical filter and a fine mesh filter. Some dishwashers have both.
  6. Remove the Filter Assembly – Depending on your dishwasher model, the filter assembly may twist or lift out. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to safely remove it. Be cautious as there may be dirty water trapped in the filter.
  7. Clean the Filter – Take the filter assembly to the sink and rinse it under warm, running water. Use a soft brush or a toothbrush to remove any stubborn debris or residue. Ensure all parts of the filter are thoroughly cleaned.
  8. Inspect and Clean the Filter Housing – While the filter assembly is out, inspect the filter housing inside the dishwasher. Remove any debris or food particles that may have accumulated there.
  9. Reassemble the Filter – Once the filter assembly is clean, reinsert it into the dishwasher according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure it is securely in place.
  10. Replace the Lower Rack – If you removed the lower rack, carefully slide it back into the dishwasher.
  11. Close the Dishwasher Door – Close the dishwasher door securely.
  12. Perform a Test Run – To ensure that the filter is functioning properly, run a short test cycle with the dishwasher empty.
  13. Regular Maintenance – Repeat this cleaning process at least once a month or more frequently if you notice any decrease in your dishwasher’s performance.

If your dishwasher is still underperforming or you notice issues with it once you’ve cleaned out the filter, it could be another issue.
