Common Causes For A Washing Machine Not To Take Fabric Softener And What You Can Try To Resolve The Issue

In this article, we’re going to talk through a common complaint of a washing machine not dispensing fabric softener.

There are some possible causes that you can check for easily and quickly at home.

Before carrying out any washing machine appliance repair, we always recommend that you safely isolate the machine from the power by unplugging it and isolate the water by turning it off at the tap.

To check for the causes of a washing machine not dispensing fabric softener, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Remove the dispenser draw from the machine.

For most brands, this is done by pushing down a button or tab on the fabric softener compartment.

Step 2

Look inside both the tube at the back of the fabric softener compartment and the syphon cap covering it to make sure there is no build up of fabric softener.

When the compartment contains fabric softener and starts to fill up with water, the fabric softener and water are lifted up through the tube to create a vacuum. The vacuum then sucks all of the water and fabric softener out of the drawer. A blockage in the tube or syphon cap will prevent the fabric softener being drawn out of the compartment.

Step 3

Check the dispenser top, or water conveyor, located above the dispenser drawer for any blockages to the small holes that water comes through.

As the dispenser is above heated water, the humid environment can cause a build up of waterborne black mould. In addition to being unsightly and creating an unpleasant smell, black mould can also begin to block up the water holes.

Fabric softener itself can also block up these holes, as can a build up of limescale in areas of hard water.

The dispenser top stays inside the machine when you pull the draw out. We don’t recommend that you remove the dispenser top from the machine. If there is a serious problem, we suggest that you book a repair with NAC.

Step 4

If the holes in the dispenser top appear blocked, pick them clean with a sharp point such as a pin or needle.

While doing this, do not push the blockage further into the holes, instead completely remove the blockage from the hole.

Step 5

To deal with black mould, we recommend using a Care+Protect product designed for cleaning drums as this can also be used for cleaning dispensers.

Mix a sachet of the product with a bowl of warm water and use an old toothbrush or scrubbing brush to reach up and clean the dispenser top with the solution. The holes can also be picked clean with a sharp-ended item if required.

Step 6

If there are no blockages in the syphon cap, tube or water holes as described above, there may be a fault with the appliance itself and you may need to book a repair with NAC.
