Common Causes For A Washing Machine Not To Fill And What Can Try To Resolve The Problem

In this article, we’re going to talk through things you should check in the event that your washing machine is not filling with water.

Before repairing your washing machine appliance, we always recommend that you safely isolate the machine from the power by unplugging it. As we are dealing with the fill pipe, you will also need to turn off the tap for the pipe itself.

To check for the causes of a washing machine not filling with water, follow the steps below.

Step 1

The first thing to establish is whether or not water is getting to the machine and so you will need to identify where the water tap is located in your property.

It is commonly placed inside a cupboard next to the machine and it is often turned off accidently when reaching inside the cupboard.

Step 2

Ensure that the tap is in the ‘ON’ position in order for water to reach the washing machine.

If the water is already turned on, there are several other checks you can make.

Step 3

Turn off the water tap and disconnect the fill pipe from the machine.

This pipe can be attached quite tightly so you can use grips or pliers to loosen it. Once it’s turning freely then turn it by hand as the plastic pipe thread is easily damaged.

There will also be a little water remaining in the pipe so it is helpful to have a towel to hand.

Step 4

In order to test whether water can get to the machine, put the end of the pipe into a bucket and turn the tap back on.

If water is coming out of the pipe, you know there is no problem with supply to the machine.

Step 5

Pull out the filter inside the pipe connection and check for any blockages.

If it is blocked, clean it out with water in the sink.

In areas of hard water, this filter can become blocked with limescale. In rural areas, it can often be filled with substances such as silt, sediment and dirt.

Step 6

It is important to always place the filter back in as it protects the inlet valve inside the machine from substances such as limescale, sediment or dirt.

Step 7

Reconnect the fill pipe to the machine.

Do not use grips or pliers when reconnecting the pipe. This should be done as tightly as possible by hand to avoid damage to the pipe thread.

Step 8

Turn your water tap back on and test the washing machine by running a programme.

If the advice in this article has fixed the problem then your washing machine should start filling up. If it hasn’t then this could mean there is an internal fault inside the machine.
