Washing Machine Not Draining And What You Can Try To Resolve The Problem

In this article, we’re going to talk through what you can do in the event that your washing machine is not draining correctly.

If a washing machine is not draining out then it is often due to a blockage.

If the machine has a filter at the front then this is something you can check yourself. Before carrying out any work on your appliance, we always recommend that you safely isolate the machine from the power by unplugging it and isolate the water by turning it off at the tap.

To remove blockages in your washing machine, follow the steps below.

Step 1

If the machine is not draining then it is full of water.

As the filter is usually at the lowest point of the machine, you need to remove the water first. There are several ways to remove the water from the machine.

Your washing machine is likely to have a syphon pipe, which is a small pipe usually located by the filter. If so, unplug the syphon pipe and let it syphon all the water out of the machine.

The water can come out very slowly and you may need to put the cap back on the syphon pipe, empty the bowl and start again. Once the water has stopped flowing, put the cap back on and proceed to remove the filter.

Alternatively, if the waste pipe exits the machine at the bottom of the cabinet then you can disconnect the waste hose, lay it down on the floor and that should syphon the water out, provided it is not severely blocked.

If there is no syphon pipe and you can’t get to the waste pipe, the only other option is to pull the machine forward. You may require some assistance doing this. Lean the machine backwards first, put a bowl underneath the filter to catch the water and then lean it forwards to drain.

With any of these methods, water will always escape onto the floor so it’s a good idea to have towels laid out to soak this up.

Step 2

Once the water is removed, it can be helpful to take off the flap covering the filter in order to assist in removing it.

Step 3

You then need to unscrew and remove the filter.

A small amount of water may escape therefore ensure that you have a towel to hand.

Step 4

Check the filter for any trapped material such as coins, clips or fabric that could be stopping the water from draining.

If the filter is blocked, clean it over a bin or sink to remove the blockage.

Step 5

Check inside the filter housing to see if there is anything inside that needs pulling out.

Step 6

Once cleaned, put the filter back into the machine and tighten by hand. There is usually a stop mark to prevent it being overtightened.

Step 7

You then need to proceed to test the washing machine and check that it can drain out any water.
