Let the appliance cool down first

This one matters most with ovens and cookers. If the appliance has been used recently, give it time to cool completely before you start. Reaching into a hot oven to change a bulb is an easy way to burn yourself, and components like the glass cover and bulb hold heat for a good while after the power is off. Patience here saves skin.

Wear protective gloves

A decent pair of protective gloves is highly recommended for almost any DIY appliance task. They do two useful things:

  • They give you extra grip, so fiddly jobs (like unscrewing a stubborn bulb or panel) go more smoothly.
