Freezer Maintenance Tips

Proper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of any home appliance, but many people don’t know how to look after their freezers. That’s why we’re here to help!

If you want to keep your Freezer in tip-top condition, here are a couple of things you should be doing…

Regular Cleaning

It’s nobody’s favourite job but regularly cleaning your freezer can help with a number of common freezer issues, so we highly recommend giving your freezer a clean every couple of weeks or once a month.

  • Wipe down the interior of your freezer using a mild soap and warm water to prevent the buildup of spills and stains that can cause odours to develop
  • Make sure you avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as they could damage the inside of your appliance
  • Pay close attention to the seals and keep them free of debris and grime to maintain their effectiveness
  • Clean the coils at the back of your freezer to prevent dust and debris collecting as this can dramatically affect the freezer’s efficiency

Keep Things Organised

Keeping your freezer neat and tidy can help you to get the most out of your appliance by ensuring efficient cooling – plus you’ll also maximise your space and be able to find what you’re after with ease!

  • Use freezer-safe containers or bags to store food as this helps to reduce the amount of debris in your freezer and also minimises the chance of freezer burn
  • Label and date your frozen food where possible to keep track of its freshness and regularly clear out things that have been sitting at the bottom of your freezer for too long

Controlling the Temperature

Setting your freezer at the right temperature is absolutely vital for proper food preservation and safety. Freezers should be set at the recommended temperature range of -18°C to -20°C.

  • We recommend using a freezer thermometer in order to gauge the actual temperature of your appliance
  • Adjust the temperature accordingly until it reads correctly and check it regularly for any issues
  • Make sure to minimise the time your freezer is open and the frequency you open it, as this will affect the temperature

Common Freezer Issues & How to Fix Them

My Freezer is Leaking

Your freezer could be leaking for a number of reasons, but usually its one of the following faults causing the issue…

  • Clogged or frozen drainage tube
  • Damaged drain pan
  • Improperly sealed door
  • Buildup of frost

Here are some tips you can try to fix the issue yourself at home:

  1. Safety first – unplug the freezer from its power source to reduce all electrical hazards
  2. Contain the leak – catch the water to prevent it from spreading; especially to your other appliances!
  3. Check & remove the contents – empty out the contents of your freezer to stop them getting damaged
  4. Find the source – now it’s likely to be caused by one of the faults listed above so it’s a good idea to check for them. Try the following steps to identify the source fo the leak.
  5. Check inside the freezer for any ice or water accumulation that could be causing the leak
  6. Look for clogged drain tubes, overflowing drain pans, or other visible issues.
Examine the exterior of the freezer for any signs of leaks or damage, such as water pooling or dripping from the bottom or sides.
  7. Clean the drains – remove any debris, ice or blockages in the drain tube and pan using a soft cloth or try a pipe cleaner for those tighter spaces
  8. Contact NAC – if you can’t find or fix the leak then it’s time to book your appointment with your local NAC Appliance Repair Technician.

My Freezer is Making Loud Noises

The first step of solving this common issue is to identify the source of the noise, which can be done quite easily using just your ears! Common sources to pay attention to include:

  • The compressor
  • The evaporator fan
  • The condenser
  • Ice maker

Once you’ve found the source of the problem, here are some things you can try at home to fix your noisy freezer:

  1. Ensure it’s level – Use a level to make sure that your appliance is sitting on a flat surface. If it isn’t already, adjust the feet or the position of the freezer until it sits perfectly level to avoid any wobbling or rocking that can contribute the sound.
  2. Clean the Condenser Coils – Dust and debris can build up on the freezer’s condenser coils which unfortunately means your freezer will have to work much harder to maintain it’s temperature, therefore making more noise than usual. Give your condenser coils a wipe over to remove the dust.
  3. Check the Evaporator Fan – A noisy freezer could be caused by a faulty or damaged evaporator fan or worn fan motor. Take a look at your appliance’s manual to locate the part and check for any visible signs of damage. If the part is damaged, you will need a replacement freezer fan motor. Contact your local appliance repair technician for advice.
  4. Consult a professional. If the above do not solve the issue then the problem may be more serious! Book a callout with your local appliance repair technician at NAC today.

My Freezer is Too Warm

If your freezer just isn’t feeling cold enough any more then your food may no longer be safe. Here are a couple of things you can do at home to fix your freezer when it’s too warm…

Check the temperature setting and adjust it to a colder level if needed.

  • Make sure the temperature control dial or settings for your freezer are correctly adjusted.
  • Consult the freezer’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions to determine the recommended temperature range.
  • Adjust the temperature setting to a colder level if necessary.

Inspect the door seal/gasket for damage and ensure it is properly aligned.

  • Examine the door seal (gasket) for any signs of damage, wear, or gaps.
  • A faulty or improperly sealed door can allow warm air to enter, causing the freezer to become too warm.
  • Clean the door seal and ensure it is properly aligned, making a tight seal when the door is closed.
  • If the seal is damaged or worn out, it may need to be replaced. Contact the manufacturer or a professional technician for assistance. Or purchase a replacement freezer seal and fit it yourself!

Remove any obstructions and ensure proper airflow inside the freezer.

  • Ensure that the vents inside the freezer are not blocked by food items or other objects.
  • Arrange the items inside the freezer to allow for proper airflow, which helps maintain consistent temperatures.
  • Avoid overpacking the freezer, as this can restrict airflow and hinder the cooling process.

Clean the condenser coils to improve cooling efficiency.

  • Dust and debris on the condenser coils can impede the cooling efficiency of the freezer.
  • Consult the freezer’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions on how to access and clean the condenser coils properly.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner or a coil brush to gently remove dirt and debris from the coils.

Verify the proper functioning of the evaporator fan.

  • The evaporator fan circulates cold air throughout the freezer.
  • Ensure that the fan is functioning properly and spinning freely.
  • If the fan is not running or making unusual noises, it may need to be repaired or replaced. Contact the manufacturer or a professional technician for assistance.

Ensure adequate space around the freezer for proper ventilation.

  • Ensure that the freezer is positioned with sufficient space around it for proper ventilation.
  • Clear any obstructions that could block the airflow, such as against walls or other appliances.
  • Maintain adequate clearance between the freezer and the wall to allow heat dissipation.

Check the defrost system and perform a manual defrost if necessary.

  • If your freezer has a manual defrost system, check if it requires defrosting.
  • Excessive frost buildup can obstruct airflow and lead to inadequate cooling.
  • Follow the freezer’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions for defrosting properly.
