Correctly Maintaining Your Spray Arms And The Importance Of Keeping Them Clean

In this article, we’re going to talk through a common complaint of poor washing results from a dishwasher.

When this issue occurs, it is often due to the jets in the spray arms becoming blocked with food deposits.

When a dishwasher fills with water, it recirculates the same water for quite some time. If food hasn’t been efficiently removed from items, food will get into the dishwasher. The motor will then fire food deposits out through the jets in the spray arms and become blocked.

The two end jets on the spray arms are critical as they enable the arm to spin. If one or both of them are blocked, the arm will become static and therefore unable to clean items inside the dishwasher.

To clean the spray arms in a dishwasher, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Remove the spray arms from the dishwasher.

Most dishwashers have two spray arms, one below the bottom basket and another below the top basket.

The bottom spray arm is simply clipped into place and can be removed with a small pull. The top spray arm is usually on a screw thread and is turned a quarter turn and pulled free.

Step 2

Take each spray arm to the sink and ensure water is flowing through the central channel in the arm.

Carefully pick the holes on the spray arm clear of any blockages using something small such as a pin or needle. This can require some patience and persistence but will allow you to ensure that the holes are completely clear.

Do not try to make the jet holes any larger as this will change the pressure of the holes and therefore stop the arms spinning.

Step 3

Fit the spray arms back into the dishwasher.

For the bottom arm, simply push down until it clips into place. For the top arm, attach and turn a quarter turn in the opposite direction to secure on.

If you are experiencing poor washing results then it is worth cleaning the spray arms as this can make a significant difference to the washing quality of your machine.
