Poor heat distribution, broken oven door, a smell of gas, hob not working – fix these issues and more.
In this article, we’re going to talk about a common complaint of poor dishwasher drying results. Understanding how the drying process works is helpful in addressing one cause of this.
As part of the rinsing and drying at the end of a programme, the dishwasher heats up the items inside the machine including the cabinet, the carcass, glassware, ceramics and metallic objects. It is the trapped heat inside these items that dry them.
Opening the door at the end therefore finishes the drying process. If the door is left closed for a long period of time, the trapped heat inside the machine naturally cools down and condenses into water. This causes the items to become wet again.
Therefore, a cause of poor drying results could simply be due to the door not being opened at the end of a cycle.
Some high end dishwashers may have a mechanism to automatically open the door at the end of a cycle although many require you to physically open the door.
Another common complaint is plastic items still being wet at the end of a cycle while other items are dry. Unfortunately, this is a natural part of the drying process as plastic does not trap heat in the same way as other materials. Therefore, although plastic items will be clean at the end of a cycle, they will always remain wet.
Rinse aid plays an important role in the drying process as it breaks up the surface tension in the water. Along with the trapped heat in the machine, rinse aid prevents water clinging to items and allows it to fall off in large sheets.
It is always recommended to use rinse aid as a separate component, rather than relying on a combined tablet.
To replenish the rinse aid in a dishwasher, follow the steps below.
It is worth noting that once the rinse aid has been replenished, it is not all used in one wash and can last several weeks or months.
Too much rinse aid inside the machine will cause an oversudding problem whereby too much foam is created.
Too much rinse aid will create excess foam and too little will create drying problems.
